Karen Lounton

Karen has worked for Sunderland City Council since 1987, with the early part of her career spent in what was then the Public Health Department, undertaking various administrative positions.

Between 1990 and 2009, Karen was based in the City Treasurers Department, specialising in Revenues.  Throughout a period of extensive change in local government finance, Karen saw the introduction and demise of Community Charge and the eventual introduction and establishment of Council Tax.  She held various positions within City Treasurers, eventually becoming Head of Recovery managing a large team of staff and overseeing the annual collection and recovery of millions of pounds of Council Tax revenue for Sunderland City Council.

An active and qualified member of the Institute of Rating, Revenues and Valuation, Karen sat on the Northern Counties regional board of the national association until 2009.

A career change in early 2009 brought Karen to the Registration Service at Sunderland City Council, undertaking the role of Deputy Registration Services Manager. 

In October 2012 Karen took up her current position of Bereavement & Registration Services Manager with overall responsibility for Registration, Cemeteries and Crematoria and the Coroner Service in Sunderland.  She manages a progressive and busy service which prides itself in excellence in service delivery.
